CIMAGE’s Winning Formula: Practical Math's Skills for Competitive Exams

At CIMAGE College, Patna, students are not just taught Mathematics—they’re trained to use it in the real world. Behind this transformation is a dedicated faculty member, Kundan Kumar, who has been shaping the way students learn numbers and logic for the past three years.

A Gold Medalist in Mathematics and now a respected faculty member at CIMAGE, Kundan Sir’s journey is as inspiring as it is informative. From mastering shortcuts to preparing students for competitive exams, his teaching goes far beyond textbooks.

A New Learning Experience at CIMAGE

When Kundan Sir joined CIMAGE College three years ago, he was already confident in his core subject—advanced Mathematics topics like Set Theory, Relations, Functions, Differential and Integral Calculus, Vector Analysis, and Numerical Analysis. But CIMAGE offered something new exposure to practical, competitive, and real-life math problems.

“Every month, we have meetings with our Director Sir,” he shared. “In those meetings, we’re guided to update our teaching methods and include more activities. This helps both students and teachers grow together.”

One of the biggest learning curves for him was adapting his long-method approach to teaching competitive-level Mathematics in a much shorter time frame.

Learning Shortcuts for Competitive Exams

Traditionally, topics like Percentages, Time and Work, and Ratios are taught using detailed long methods. However, competitive exams like TCS NQT, Wipro, CAT, MAT, Bank PO, and NIMCET demand quick problem-solving—most questions must be solved in under 30 seconds.

“At first, I taught the way I had learned myself—long methods. But soon I realized that to help students crack these competitive exams, I needed to focus on smart shortcuts,” he said. “This changed my own way of thinking and made me a better teacher.”

These shortcuts, according to him, are not just tricks—they're strategies that help students manage time and score better. “The questions are basic but solving them fast is the real challenge.”

Preparing for Exams Like TCS NQT and Bank PO

CIMAGE’s approach to exam preparation is unique. Students get both offline training in classrooms and online testing in labs to simulate real exam conditions.

“We teach each topic—like Percentages or Ratios—in class with real-world examples and tricks. Once they understand the concepts, we take them to the lab and make them take online weekly tests,” he explained. “The test pattern and time limit are set exactly like the actual exams.”

For instance, in TCS NQT, students may face 20 questions in just 15 minutes. That means they must solve each question in around 45 seconds or less. Kundan Sir ensures students are well-practiced and confident before they face such challenges.

Strength in Practice: His Teaching Philosophy

“Mathematics becomes easy when you practice it a lot,” Kundan Sir believes. His teaching style is centered on practice-based learning. Every student solves dozens of problems in class. Over time, the steps and logic become second nature.

“I give so much practice that students don’t even realize they’ve memorized the methods. It becomes automatic,” he said with a smile.

Even for regular BCA, BCom (Professional), BSc IT, and MCA courses, he ensures that students are well prepared for both academic and practical exams.

Competitive Edge for All Students—No Math Background Needed

What makes CIMAGE’s Math training special is that it doesn’t assume every student comes with a strong Math background.

“Most of these topics—Percentages, Ratios, Time & Work—are actually taught before Class 10. But students have either forgotten them or only learned long methods,” he explained. “Here, we re-teach them from the ground up—but with a competitive exam mindset.”

Whether students are from commerce, science, or arts backgrounds, they are taught how to approach problems logically and quickly. That’s why even those who were once afraid of Math start enjoying it at CIMAGE.

Practical Exposure in Labs

CIMAGE has well-equipped computer labs where students give mock online exams. Since exams like TCS NQT and Wipro are held online, this gives students real-time experience.

“Each class has its own test schedule,” he said. “We don’t mix everyone together. That way, every student gets personalized attention and test experience.”

The mock tests are prepared using previous year questions (PYQs) from the actual exams. This makes the practice more relevant, and exam focused.

Building Careers, Not Just Clearing Subjects

While the college syllabus is covered thoroughly, the bigger aim is to make students job ready. For instance, many students dream of working at companies like TCS, Wipro, or cracking exams like Bank PO. Kundan Sir helps make those dreams real.

“My focus is not just to complete the syllabus. I want students to clear the exams and get placed,” he emphasized.

Teaching Style: Simple, Systematic, and Student-Friendly

Kundan Sir keeps his classes interactive and student friendly. He starts with basics, introduces shortcuts, and gives students ample problems to practice. There’s never a dull moment in his class, and he makes sure no one is left behind.

“When students see their own improvement—solving questions in 20 seconds that used to take 2 minutes—they get confident,” he said.

For course-related exams like university papers, he switches gears and teaches the full long method, ensuring students can write proper solutions as required.

Kundan Kumar’s journey is proof that great teaching evolves with the needs of students. At CIMAGE, he has adapted, learned, and contributed to building a system where Mathematics is not feared, but enjoyed.

His efforts ensure that students don’t just study Math—they apply it, whether it’s in a coding job, a bank interview, or a national-level entrance test.

In his own words: “If you practice enough, even the toughest-looking question becomes easy. All it takes is the right guidance—and at CIMAGE, that’s what we aim to give.”
